Harlem Hospital Center

A new hospital that carries the neighborhood's own murals into its glass.

Location

Harlem, New York

Typology

Healthcare

Year

2013

Scope

New 200,000 sf hospital building

Status

Completed

Harlem Hospital Center's new building needed to do two things at once: deliver two hundred thousand square feet of modern hospital space, and carry forward murals that had become part of the neighborhood's identity, this time set into the exterior curtain-wall glazing itself.

Working with HOK for NYC Health + Hospitals, we helped resolve the technical problem at the center of that idea: mounting artwork within a high-performance glazed facade without compromising the building's envelope or the murals' visibility from the street. The result is a hospital that reads, from blocks away, as unmistakably part of Harlem.

Architect of record: HOK. Client: NYC Health + Hospitals
